SHAR-Q News
A joint final event with SHAR-Q and H2020 Storage4Grid was held in Brussels on October 24th, with a complete agenda involving partners from both projects and remarkable invited speakers from related Associations (REScoop.EU, AIOTI.eu, EASE and BDVA), H2020 projects (PLANET and DOMINOES), industry stakeholders and the European Commission.
After a Keynote speech on “Flexibility and storage under the CEP” by Konstantinos Stamatis, from the European Commission (DG ENER), a dedicated session for each project took place, focused on their main outcomes and achievements.
From SHAR-Q side, Evangelos Karfopoulos, from ICCS - Technical Coordinator - gave a general overview on the project. Viktor Oravec, from BAVENIR, explained the basics of the SHAR-Q platform and its most remarkable features. Finally, the main achievements from the deployment of the three pilot sites were shown: Güssing pilot (Austria) by Joachim Hacker from EEE; Meltemi pilot (Greece) by Evangelos Karfopoulos, and finally, Alcoutim pilot (Portugal) by Natalie Samovich from Enercoutim.
Afterwards, Storage4Grid partners presented its innovation, tangible outcomes and business models. Maurizio Spirito from LINKS Foundation - Project Manager - provided a general overview. Vasco Delgado-Gomes, from UNINOVA, explained the main results and their deployment at the three pilot sites (Bucharest, Bolzano and Fur/Skive). Then, Elisa Pautasso, from LINKS, analyzed the business models for the three pilots and the main exploitable project assets, and finally, Mihai Sanduleac from UPB – Technical Manager - described the most remarkable achievements from the technical point of view.
With the two projects’ outcomes in mind, two panel discussions were held to share different experiences and insights with the invited panelists around two main topics: “The role of associations to boost technical, technological and social cooperation towards the energy grids of the future”, and “Business models for exploitation”.
In the first panel, Roland Tual (REScoop.EU), Juergen Strum (AIOTI.eu), Patrick Clerens (EASE) and Arne Berre (BDVA) discussed about the potential benefits that storage may bring from their organizations’ perspective, the opportunities that the digitalization of the energy networks may offer to energy communities and neighbourhoods and how mature the outcomes from projects like SHAR-Q and Storage4Grid are to meet the expectations from the market and to support energy sharing energy communities.
In the second panel, Vasiliki Katsiki (representing H2020 PLANET project), Jan Segerstam (representing H2020 DOMINOES project) and Michele Santovito (I-Tes), discussed about the emerging business models in the new smart grids value chain, the most promising enabling technologies to deliver successful business models and the main lessons learnt and gaps to be filled.
As a final remark, it was concluded that in the framework of opportunity that the Smart grids represent, SHAR-Q and Storage4Grid are on the good track considering their low TRL level, but there is still much work to do. For that reason, keeping an eye on the market and the user at the focus is deemed key, as well as a good stakeholder engagement strategy from the early design stages to the validation of results and fully committed projects teams to carry out the work. Collaboration and knowledge sharing at events like this will be substantial to reach these objectives.
